Discussion

The existing 56 individual mailboxes and their sheds that protect them and the posts that hold them up need significant maintenance. An estimate for the required maintenance is $3,500. Below are some pictures of the existing mailboxes:

The alternative is install cluster box units (CBU) sometimes referred to as “clustered mailboxes” or “community mailboxes”. The main advantage of installing CBUs is SECURITY. CBUs provide security for outgoing mail collection, and for mail and package delivery.

CBUs are manufactured according to USPS specifications.

This video provides some general info on CBUs:

This 13-page document that provides much good info on CBUs.

Below is a table with data on the units selected. Common installed dimensions for both units in the below table are: Height = 62 inches; Width = 30.5 inches; and Depth = 18 inches.

Mailbox Compartments Parcel Lockers Mailboxes/Parcel Locker Pedestal Height Weight (LBS) Unit Cost Installed Cost
8 2 4 28.5 144 $1,240 $1,767
16 2 8 14.5 175 $1,310 $1,843

The costs in the above table come from www.harringtonmailbox.com which is owned by Dave Harrington in Gig Harbor, WA.  The installed cost includes the unit cost, $375/unit installation cost (from Dave’s website), and sales tax. The CBUs were ordered from an online source  which reduced the project cost.

What color?  The below picture shows the five available colors.  The most popular color in this area is sandstone.  Dark bronze was chosen.
